1992 Upper Peninsula Excursions

In the summer of 1992 the DSS&S Division of the Soo Line Historical and Technical Society (SLHTS) held excursions out of Marquette. On the Saturday we went to Baraga and return, then on the Sunday we went to Newberry and return.

The passengers cars arrived at Trout Lake on Friday, the day before the first excursion. Here they are being pushed down the stub of the ex-DSS&A line to St. Ignace.

Now they are being pulled past the Trout Lake depot and along the ex-DSS&A line to Marquette via Munising.

At the Marquette roundhouse on Friday, the power is being readied for the excursion.

At Nestoria we stopped briefly to let a local TV crew off so they could record a runby.

This is the original DSS&A depot at Lanse.

At Baraga there were a couple of cars of pulpwood that had to be moved out of the way before the engines could run around the train.

Heading back to Marquette between Humboldt and Ishpeming.

On the hill down into Marquette we met an empty ore train on the LS&I. This name of this location is Bagdad.

On Sunday the excursion was to Newberry. Here we are leaving Marquette alongside Lake Superior. This track has now been lifted between Eagle Mills and Munising.

Heading through Au Train.

Through McMillan. I will always remember riding through the swamps between Seney and Newberry. All there was visible above the water was the ballast and the rails.

Arriving at Newberry. The track had been rationalized here earlier in the year.
